Daud Khan Achakzai injured in attempt on life

ISLAMABAD: Former senator Daud Khan Achakzai was injured in an attempt on his life on Monday.

He was taken to Civil Hospital, Quetta after four unidentified men attacked him at his residence in Chaman. He was shot in the right arm. Doctors say his condition is stable. He is under treatment at the trauma centre of the hospital.

Killa Abdullah Deputy Commissioner Tufail Baloch said that the former senator had been provided security. The attackers fled the scene after the guards retaliated with firing.

Security forces are conducting a search operation in the area. Investigations are underway.

Achakzai is the second ANP leader targeted ahead of the election on July 25. He served as the party’s senator elected from Balochistan between 2012 and 2018. ANP leaders say they have limited their campaign in the run-up to the election as banned outfits have issued threats to the party’s leaders.

This is the fourth attack targeting a politician ahead of the election. Earlier, ANP leader Haroon Bilour and BAP leader Nawabzada Siraj Raisani lost their lives along with more than 150 others in two attacks in this month – one each in Peshawar and Mastung. JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani was also injured in one such attack in Bannu. The PML-N also suspended its election-related activities on Sunday for a day due to what its president Shehbaz Sharif described as a “fear of attacks”. APP
