SC appoints justice (Retd) Ameer Hani as water commission chief

KARACHI: The Supreme Court has appointed Justice (retd) Ameer Hani as the Water Commission chairman in place of Justice Iqbal Kalhoro.

Justice (retd) Ameer Hani will have all powers of a Supreme Court judge, including transfer, posting and contempt of court.

In his remarks at Karachi Registry, CJP Saqib Nisar said that they were deciding it as it is a matter of public interest.

He said that they would grant huge powers to Justice Ameer Hani as well.

Tea whiteners are not milk: Hearing the packaged milk case, the chief justice remarked that tea whiteners are not milk in any sense. “You have to give in writing, through advertisements on TV and print, that this is not milk,” he observed and gave the companies four weeks to ensure the warning is printed on packets.

He added that reputable brands are also selling substandard milk.

The chief justice also observed that they will look at the matter of packaged milk first then move on to ‘open milk’.

Six-storey buildings permitted: Hearing the high-rise buildings case, the court allowed the builders to construct six-storey buildings in the city.

The CJP remarked that they cannot approve more than six-storey buildings.

In May 2017, the Supreme Court had stopped the Sindh Building Control Authority and cantonment boards from issuing building approval plans for high-rise and multi-storey residential and commercial structures without the availability of proper water supply and sewerage systems.
