Afghan Taliban kill at least 17 police officials in attacks on police posts

KUNDUZ: Taliban gunmen killed nine police and wounded eight others in the Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province, officials said Saturday. The Taliban fighters attacked two police posts in the Joyee Begum area of Imam Sahib district last night, said Mahboobullah Saeedi, administrator of the same district.

The ensuing clash lasted for several hours, leaving five police dead and another five wounded, he told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP), adding the Taliban also suffered casualties but they had no accurate count. He said national and local police were among the dead and wounded.

Chairman of Kunduz’s provincial council Muhammad Yousaf Ayubi, however, told AIP that nine police were killed and eight more wounded in the attacks.

The attack was carried out in an area recently cleared by Afghan forces. Earlier, local residents said the attack left eight police dead and upto 10 more wounded.
