Lawmakers' disqualification under article 62 (1)(f) for life: SC

ISLAMABAD:The Supreme Court has declared that disqualification of lawmakers under Article-62(1)(f) of the Constitution would be for life.

Reserved judgement of the five member bench of the Supreme Court was pronounced by Justice Omer Atta Bandial on Friday.

The bench was headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Nisar Saqib.

The verdict on different petitions and appeals challenging the length of disqualification under the said article was reserved by the court on 14th of February this year.

It is the same article under which former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and PTI leader Jehangir Tarin were disqualified by the Supreme Court.

The apex court ruled that the disqualification will hold until the court declaration disqualifying the lawmaker would stand.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed has also written an additional note in the judgment. It says the court is empowered to interpret the Constitution but not to amend it.

He said the period of disqualification in certain sub-Articles of Article 63 of the Constitution has been provided but the framers of the constitution chose not to put such a sunset clause in Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that he expected this kind of verdict on the interpretation of Article-62 (1)(f).

Talking informally to workers of PML (N) in Lahore Friday, he asked them to remain calm.    APP/AFP
