MOAB GBU-43B : World's most powerful bomb dropped in Afghanistan near Pak border
The United States dropped a non-nuclear bomb believed to be the largest ever in the country’s arsenal on an area of eastern Afghanistan, here on Thursday.
The apparent target of the air strike was a network of caves used by the militant Islamic State (IS). There has been no official confirmation of the President Trump’s involvement in the strike.
According to Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump, it was the first time this type of bomb had been used in combat and was dropped from a MC-130 aircraft.
A GBU-43/B Massive Ordinance Air Blast Bomb, nicknamed MOAB contains 11 tons of explosives and was dropped at 7pm local time.
There have been no assessments of civilian deaths as yet and it was not immediately clear how much damage the bomb did.
Also known as the “mother of all bombs”, a MOAB is a 21,600 pound GPS guided munition. It is America’s most powerful non-nuclear bomb.
