BEIJING: China condemns the violent attacks in the Rakhine state of Myanmar , and backs Myanmar 's efforts to "safeguard peace and stability," a spokesperson from China 's foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks while responding to a question about what some say is "ethnic cleansing" against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar at a press conference in Beijing.

Geng said the international community should support Myanmar 's efforts to safeguard development and stability, and create a favorable outside environment for resolving the problems of Rakhine state.

Pressure has mounted on Myanmar in the past week to end the violence that has sent some 370,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh.

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar says its security forces are fighting Rohingya militants behind a surge of violence in Rakhine state that began on August 25, and they are doing all they can to avoid harming civilians.

The Myanmar government says about 400 people have been killed in the fighting.
