WASHINGTON: Pakistani born astrophysicist Dr. Nergis Mavalvala was amongst the team of scientists who observed gravitational waves for the first time.
The team of scientists named eagled-eyed, verified Alberrt Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity by observing ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves .

The observation has opened a new window onto the cosmos.
She was born in Karachi in a Parsi family and later moved to US.
She did BA in Physics and Astronomy from the Wellesley College in 1990 and Ph.D in Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997.
She joined MIT’s Physics department as an Assistant Professor and started working on gravitational waves in 2002 & became department’s associate head in February 2015.
The researchers claimed that gravitational waves were product of a collision between 2 black holes.
