Funeral prayers of men killed in protest over minor girl’s killing offered

KASUR: The funeral prayers of the two men, who were shot dead by the police during a protest outside Deputy Commissioner office in Kasur following the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, have been offered on Thursday.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral prayers of the deceased men.
Earlier, their bodies were shifted to their native areas.
The city had been tense after the girl disappeared on January 4 while on her way home from a tuition center. Her parents were away on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, and her family circulated CCTV footage on social media that showed her with an unidentified man.
To stop the protesters, the police opened fire, killing two persons namely Muhammad Ali and Shoaib on the spot, while injuring five others.
The heirs of the deceased Muhammad Ali and Shoaib said that whether its Model Town or Kasur or any other city, the police only kill peaceful protesters.
News of the killing, and reports that the girl had been raped, swept through Pakistani news programs and social media, and nationally known politicians demanded that her killer be found.
The authorities have released CCTV footage that showed her walking with a man along a road in the evening, holding his hand and showing no apparent signs of fear.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar and Army Chief Gen Qamar Bajwa have taken serious notice of the tragic incident and vowed immediate justice to the parents of the deceased girl.
Activists on social media have condemned the government for failing to arrest those involved in the crime.
Soon after, CJP, Army Chief and Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif took notice of policemen accused of firing and District Police Officer Kasur was removed from his position pending an investigation on the police fire.
Taking notice of the heart wrenching incident, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar, had taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the Inspector General of Police, Punjab, within 24 hours.
Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Bajwa condemned the “cold-blooded murder” and directed immediate “support to the civil administration to arrest the criminals and bring them to justice”, the army’s media wing said.
