NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister and his Bharatia Janata Party faced a big setback in today's election in five Indian states.
Elections were held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram today.
The opposition Congress Party looks set to form governments in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while early results in Madhya Pradesh put the Congress well ahead.
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is set to form government in Telangana.
Election Commission has informed the Mizo National Front has won in Mizoram, beating the Congress by a slim margin.
However the opposition, headed by Rahul Gandhi, has a clear lead in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, which are former BJP strongholds.
Mr Modi, whose brand of Hindu nationalism helped him come to power in 2014, campaigned aggressively in all three states.
