Afghan Taliban capture various security check posts, villages in northern province

KABUL: Afghan Taliban have captured three security checkpoints and four villages in Dasht-i-Qala district of northeastern Takhar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Maj. Khalil Aseer told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants stormed security check-posts in the district on Monday night, capturing three check-posts and Bagh-i-Paeen area.

One policeman and a militant were killed and two policemen were missing, the police spokesman said.

Haseebullah, a resident of the area, confirmed the militants had overrun Bagh-i-Paeen, Lab-e-Sarak, Khairabad and Ghar Tapy villages.

He said the security forces retreated without any resistance.

The Taliban confirmed the development. Zabihullah Mujahid, the group’s spokesman, said the fighters captured five villages and three security posts.

Three policemen were killed, two were wounded and as many seized by the Taliban, he claimed.
