KABUL: Dozens of Afghan Taliban attacked Barg-e-Matal district of eastern Nuristan province early Monday and clashed with security forces, local officials confirmed.

The attack started at about 5am local time after dozens of Taliban stormed the district. Clashes are ongoing, said officials.

In the meantime, residents of Barg-e-Matal said the “the people have been stuck in their homes and so far three or four houses have been torched.”

The residents also said that the Taliban attacked the district from three directions and so far no reinforcements have arrived in the area.

“At least 14 Taliban and a security force member were killed in the ongoing clashes,” the resident added.

But the Taliban claimed that they captured a security check post during the attack.

However, local security forces have not yet commented on this.
