Air quality in Indian capital severely degrades

NEW DELHI: Air quality in the Indian capital New Delhi has been severely degraded with government efforts not succeeding to control pollution.

In India, government's efforts failed to adequately address the pollution as it hit "severe" on air quality scale in New Delhi on Saturday.

A city government spokesman said seasonal burning of crop stubble and smoke from vehicle emissions and industrial gases have aggravated the already tense situation.

The spokesman said neither governing party at federal level nor main opposition are in power in the capital, giving them little incentive to co-operate with city authorities.

Environmental activists say residents need to be more vocal about holding political leaders to account over the pollution.

Meanwhile, city government has banned heavy vehicles from entering Delhi until tomorrow and it was not clear if that order would be extended.
