NEW YORK: Pakistan’s Ambassador to UNSC Maleeha Lodhi claimed that Pakistan will strongly oppose the UNSC permanent member increase move.
She claimed that veto is an important key issue for Pakistan and it must be tackled as part of comprehensive reforms of the Security Council.
She claimed that Pakistan doesn’t support any proposal aiming of expansion in veto powers but Pakistan strongly support the expansion of Security Council members in the non-permanent category.
She claimed that Kashmir dispute has not been resolved due to the use of veto power in the United Nations Security Council that has curbed UN to implement its resolution on the issue.
“If today the Council remains paralysed and deadlock over reconciling to accommodate the interests of the five permanent members, how will it cope with the interest of more such members?” she questioned.
She was talking at third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council Reforms (IGN).
US, Britain, China, Australia and Singapore also opposed extending veto rights to new permanent members.
