Sustainable peace is not possible without setting international disputes: Maleeah Lodhi

Pakistan has called for a decisive shift from responding to crises to preventing them in order to accomplish sustainable peace.

Speaking in a debate at the United Nations in New York on conflict prevention and sustainable peace, Pakistan's Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi underscored the need for the resolution of long-standing political disputes to build and sustain peace.

Maleeha Lodhi said effective preventive strategies rely on early reaction to factors that trigger violence.

She said the United Nations can not fulfill the role of sustaining peace and preventing conflict without adequate financial resources and political support of member states.

Opening the debate, the new UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said that he has made conflict prevention his top priority.
