NEW DELHI -Indian Army inducts new lethal weapons in Occupied Kashmir for counter terrorism operations .

Indian Army has started inducting 1st batch of 10,000 Sig Sauer assault rifles for counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir, sources told ANI.

It may be recalled that Defence Ministry had signed a contract on February 12, 2019 to procure 72,400 7.6mm Sig Sauer assault rifles under fast-track procedures to equip the armed forces with more capable guns. It is learnt that the cost of the deal was approximately Rs 700 crore.

The induction of the US-made assault rifles will play an important role in modernising the armed forces. The Sig Sauer assault rifles are already being used by armed forces in the US and several European countries.

The need for Sig Sauer assault rifles was repeatedly pitched in view of evolving security threats from both Pakistan and China.

The Indian armed forces are presently equipped with 5.56*45 mm INSAS Rifle and Sig Sauer assault rifles, which is compact, robust and modern in technology will replace INSAS rifle.
