SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, people held forceful demonstrations in Srinagar and other areas today, to protest against the BJP-led Indian government’s attempts to abrogate Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution which guarantees special privileges and rights of the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
As the Juma prayers culminated, today, people hit the streets in Srinagar, Badgam, Ganderbal, Islamabad, Shopian, Pulwama, Tral, Kulgam, Bandipora, Kupwara and Baramulla areas and staged demonstrations against the Indian conspiracy. The protesters led by Hurriyat leaders including Muhammad Yasin Malik, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Hakeem Abdur Rasheed and Bilal Siddiqi raised high-pitched pro-freedom, pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans.
Addressing the protesters, the Hurriyat leaders said that the Kashmiris will oppose any tinkering with the Article 35-A tooth and nail. Indian police subjected the protesters to brute force at different places. Indian Supreme Court will hear the petitions seeking abrogation of Article 35-A on 27th of this month.
The Chairman Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, addressing a gathering at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar said that no court had the jurisdiction to tamper with the hereditary state subject laws of Jammu and Kashmir because UN resolutions on Kashmir clearly stated that the Kashmiri people were to decide their final dispensation by exercising the right to self-determination, a right which they were yet to exercise.
On the other hand, complete strike was observed in Pulwama district, today, against the arrest of youth and other brutalities by the Indian troops. Two youth were injured one of them critically after the troops fired bullets and pellets on protesters during a cordon and search operation in Shopian district, today. The troops also launched a siege and search operation in area of Kupwara.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat leaders and organistions in their statements paid rich tributes to prominent martyred Hurriyat leader, Sheikh Abdul Aziz, on the eve of his 10th martyrdom anniversary. They said that the sacrifices of Sheikh Aziz and other Kashmiri martyrs will not be allowed to go waste and their mission will be accomplished at all costs.
