NAB Ordinance (amendment) presented in Senate

ISLAMABAD: (APP) The government on Tuesday presented the National Accountability (Amendment) Ordinance 2017 to the Senate.

Minister for Law and Justice, Zahid Hamid laid the ordinance before the Upper House as required by clause 2 of article 89 of the Constitution.

Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan objected on promulgation on the Ordinance as he stated that it could have been brought to any of the houses in the form of a bill.

He pointed out that imposition of life time ban on anybody for plea bargain would be against the constitution and the punishment should be reasonable.

In a quick response, the law minister said, when the matter of plea bargain was discussed at the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice senior members like Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and Farooq H Naek had objected that plea bargain was against the spirit of accountability.

Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani referred the bill (amendment ordinance) to the standing committee concerned.
