Public-Private Partnerships vital for sustainable economic growth

LAHORE: Public and private sectors of the country will have to work together for sustainable economic growth and development.
Agha Waqar Javed Member (PPP-P&D Board/Head PPP Cell) said this at a discussion on the scope of 'Public Private Partnerships in Punjab province',here on Monday.
He said that Punjab Planning & Development (P&D)-Public Private Partnership (PPP) Cell has been advancing as a torch bearer for supporting all PPP initiatives in the province.
"Public Private Partnerships are expanding in Punjab with mega infrastructure projects. We are investing Rs. 50 billion in different development projects in Punjab.The mission of PPP Cell P&D is to tap private investment and managerial abilities for provision of world class public infrastructure and service delivery", he said.
Agha Waqar said that while working on more than 41 development projects PPP Cell is exceeding ahead with new and ground-breaking projects.
The operationalized projects (under PPP mode) include Flyover at Railway Crossing at Defense road at estimated cost of Rs. 2,994 million and Vehicle Inspection and Certification System at estimated cost of Rs. 900 million in Punjab.
Most widely known Lahore Ring Road (Southern Loop) also falls in the category of awarded projects under PPP mode with an estimated cost of Rs. 24,246 million,he said.
It may be recalled that foundation stone of Lahore Ring Road (Southern Loop Project) was laid down by Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on August 14, 2016.
He said that Public Private Partnership Cell is currently working at several projects including infrastructure, health, education, housing, roads, forestry, tourism, resort development, water treatment plants and urban services in different cities of Punjab.
The prominent projects of PPP Cell which are in pipeline include Drivers Training program in Punjab, Rawalpindi Ring road, Diagnostic Centers at DHQ and THQ hospitals, Surface Water treatment plant in Lahore, Dual carriageway Dina Mangla road,Parking plazas and shopping mall in Faisalabad,Waste water treatment plant Faisalabad etc,he concluded.
