ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said that India cannot alter the disputed status of Kashmir by using its judiciary, executive, armed forces or the Parliament.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in a statement issued in Srinagar referred to Article 35-A case in the Indian Supreme Court and said that the Indian Constitution itself had guaranteed certain special rights to the people of Jammu and Kashmir till a plebiscite was conducted in the territory. “This is not a hidden agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh only but the Indian government is explicitly following it,” he said.

The Mirwaiz termed Kashmir a disputed, political and human issue. “Jammu and Kashmir was and is a dispute. It is about the relentless struggle of the people who want to express their identity through a right to choose their destiny as both India and Pakistan did when they got that opportunity in 1947. The United Nations resolutions on Kashmir are a reality and the Kashmir dispute is alive and kicking,” he said.

The Mirwaiz said, the people of Kashmir are struggling for that opportunity although it was promised to them and the world was witness to it as it stands endorsed at the United Nations.“How can any nation, in this case India, go back on its word and its commitment? Is there an expiry date to the commitment?” he asked.

The Indian government must understand that either it should implement the UN resolutions or talk with Pakistan and the people of Kashmir to settle the lingering dispute, he said, adding, Kashmiri people cannot be fooled by elections of municipalities or Panchayats as such things had been used since 1947 to trap the people.

The Mirwaiz said that the only way forward was to understand the concerns and aspirations of the people of Kashmir and address them by giving them their right to self-determination.
