Swat Expressway: Project status update

PESHAWAR (APP): Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khattak has directed for the realistic resource generation and well directed resource mobilization to facilitate the process of funding the Swat Expressway, a project of the Provincial Government being undertaken with its own resources.

The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) would construct the Swat Expressway costing Rs.40 billion that would be completed towards the end of 2017. The Chief Minister directed for facilitation of the Frontier Works Organization undertaking the project.

He expressed the hope that the FWO would maintain the high standard of construction work and directed for the removal of all bottlenecks in the construction and operational activities of the FWO on the Swat Express Way project.

He was presiding over a high level meeting for the resource mobilization to appropriately fund Swat Expressway here at Chief Minister's Secretariat here. Swat Expressway will cost approximately 40 billion rupees and will be completed within 18 months.

Recently the Frontier Works Organization in the inaugural ceremony hinted to complete the project three months before the time tag, indicating that the project would stay completed towards the end of 2017. The provincial government would pay the cost within two installments.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are three layers of committees. The first committee comprised representatives of P&D, Law and FWO for the preliminary decision making followed by the second layer of unit committee headed by Secretary P&D and the third layer is public-private partnership committee headed by Chief Minister.

The CM directed the members of all committees to be vigilant, supervise and monitor the mega projects in the province initiated by his government for the public welfare.

He also directed to expedite the resource generation through commercialization of public properties. The Chief Minister directed the Finance Department to take up the issue of net hydel releases with the Federal government so that the resources could be appropriately diverted to mega projects and strategic projects and could be completed well in time.

These projects were initiated for public welfare and the in-time completion would lead to enable the people to be benefited in the way these projects were executed, he added.

Pervez Khattak was optimistic that the Swat Express Way will become the life veins integrating the discovered and undiscovered, accessible and inaccessible northern parts of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the rest of the country. The northern parts of the province were replete with the picturesque beauty carrying an unparallel attraction for the tourists.

He hoped that this venture was going to be the launching pad for the promotion of tourism related industry in the province. Pervez Khattak said Swat Expressway was a project that would create jobs for the jobless, promote business, generate resources through tourism related activities and would ultimately lead to the overall economic activities in the province.

He directed to arrange resources to fund Swat Express Way so that the operational work goes without any hindrance. This project was the future of the province in terms of its economic outlook and it would portray what the provincial government was doing for exploring the unexplored areas and where the provincial government could widen its resource base, he added.
