US sending 1600 immigration detainees to federal prisons

WASHINGTON: In the United States, about sixteen hundred detainees, who were arrested at the border or elsewhere in the country by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, are being transferred into federal prisons.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokeswoman told a foreign news agency that five federal prisons will temporarily take in detainees awaiting civil immigration court hearings, including potential asylum seekers.

Meanwhile, officials of a prison employees’ union said the influx of these detainees, raises questions about prison staffing and safety.
