PML-N rejects selection of Hassan Askari as caretaker CM Punjab

ISLAMABAD: PML-N has rejected selection of Prof. Hasan Askari as caretaker Chief Minister Punjab by Election Commission of Pakistan, saying he is not a neutral person.

The announcement was made by former Prime Minister and PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi while addressing a news conference along with other party leaders Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Saad Rafique, Khurram Dastgir and Maryam Nawaz, in Lahore this afternoon.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said Hasan Askari's views expressed in television talk-shows and articles reflect his partiality in favor of PTI and against PML-N. He cited a recent article of Hasan Askari in which he sought delay in elections.

He said appointment of Hasan Askari as caretaker Chief Minister Punjab will make the electoral process doubtful.

Therefore, the Election Commission should review its decision and name a neutral person for the slot. He said the parliamentary committee of PML-N had proposed names of neutral persons.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said elections should not only be transparent, but these should also be seen to be transparent.

Speaking on the occasion, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said if elections become controversial, a crisis will emerge in the country.

He said PML-N will not let anyone hijack its mandate.

Khawaja Saad Rafique said Prof. Hasan Askari himself should withdraw from the responsibility because he is a controversial person.
