Pakistan will touch Absolute Scarcity Level of Water by 2025: CJ takes notice

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has taken notice on the report of Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) that Pakistan would touch absolute scarcity level of water by 2025.

According to the PCRWR report, Pakistan had touched the Water Stress Line in 1990 and crossed the Water Scarcity Line in 2005, while absolute Scarcity Level of Water is warned by 2025, a Supreme Court office press release Thursday said.

From available 142 million acre feet (MAF) of water only 42 MAF was in use while the rest was being wasted in various forms, the report added.
According to experts, scale of its impact cannot be measured and the situation calls for water emergency in the country and multifarious action as a national policy ranging from proper water management policy.

Taking notice of the issue, the Chief Justice of Pakistan has clubbed the matter with Constitution Petition No.57/2016 regarding holding of referendum of Kalabagh issue and has fixed the matter in the Court on Saturday (June 9) at Supreme Court Branch Registry, Karachi. APP
