IHC rules in favour of former PM Nawaz Sharif

On Monday, the Islamabad High Court has rejected the petition seeking a ban on Nawaz Sharif link, PML-N leader, speeches after the court observed bringing politics related matters to “tendency of invoking the constitutional jurisdiction of a high court in matters involving political content is certainly not in the public interest”

Earlier in the day, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah announced the verdict after hearing arguments.

According to the IHC, such issues are dragged unnecessarily in the courts. The court further observed that for such issues, there was an alternate forum for the redressal. It added that the court was not satisfied with the complaints. The verdict read,

“The constitutional jurisdiction of a high court in matters involving political content”, especially in cases where the law provides “alternative remedies”

The petitioner had expressed that by Nawaz’s speech the country’s security was being “threatened”. However, the court had dismissed the argument and said, the security of Pakistan is not frail nor can be threatened by mere political rhetoric.” IHC believed the petitioner’s concern regarding Pakistan’s security was “misconceived”.
