BEIJING: China said it would continue to maintain and enforce comprehensive agreements while maintaining its legitimate rights and interests.
While commenting on the second batch of the US sanctions against Iran, a spokesperson of Chinese foreign ministry, Hua Chunying said, “China has always opposed unilateral sanctions and "long arm jurisdiction”.
During her regular briefing, she said both China and Iran conducted normal economic and trade cooperation under the framework of international law, which was reasonable and legal. This right should be respected and maintained. “We will continue to maintain and enforce comprehensive agreements while maintaining our legitimate rights and interests,” she said when asked to comment on the resumption of the US sanctions against Iran’s energy and financial sectors. Hua said," China and Iran have carried out normal cooperation under the framework of international law, which is reasonable, legal and deserves to be respected and maintained.”
Regretting the US decision, she said, the Chinese side also noticed that the international community generally opposed the practice of unilateral sanctions and "long arm jurisdiction."
“The comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue is a multilateral agreement approved by the UN Security Council and should be fully and effectively implemented,” she added.
The spokesperson opined that this was conducive to maintaining the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and peace and stability in the Middle East, in line with the common interests of the international community.
She remarked that despite the great changes in the situation in the past six months, the existing parties to the comprehensive agreement had always been responsible for continuing to implement comprehensive agreements, maintaining normal economic and trade cooperation with Iran, and receiving broad support from the international community.
“We have noticed that Iran has strictly fulfilled its obligations in the nuclear field of comprehensive agreements so far. The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed it for 12 consecutive times. China appreciates the efforts of the Iranian side.”
Hua hoped that under the current situation, all parties concerned could proceed from the overall situation and fulfill their respective responsibilities and obligations and stand on the right side of history.
“China will continue to uphold its impartial, objective and responsible attitude and continue to make unremitting efforts to maintain comprehensive agreements. At the same time, it will also firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests,” she concluded.
