The World Health Organization reported pollution kills 1.7 million children a year.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in a statement that a quarter of all global deaths of children under five are due to unhealthy or polluted environments.

The causes include unsafe water, lack of sanitation, poor hygiene practices and indoor and outdoor pollution, as well as injuries.
