Punjab government takes important decision on Model Town Enquiry Report order

LAHORE:  Punjab government has decided to approach Supreme Court against the three-member bench of the Lahore High Court which (LHC) ordered on Tuesday the Punjab government to release the Model Town inquiry report within 30 days.

The order came on the appeal of the Punjab government against the LHC's earlier directives to disclose the report on the incident.

The three-member full bench, under Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh, had reserved the decision on the government's appeal on November 24.

The Punjab government had filed an intra-court appeal against the September 21 decision of a single-bench ordering the release of the inquiry report, authored by LHC Justice Baqar Najafi.

In its Tuesday's order, the full-bench directed for an impartial and transparent trial into the Model Town incident.

Following the incident, workers ofPakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) began amassing at GPO Chowk near the LHC, chanting favours in their support.

At least 14 people were killed and 100 others injured in police action against PAT workers during an 'anti-encroachment operation' on June 17, 2014.
