Supreme Court refuses to summon former Ambassador in US Asad Majeed to testify

*The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday heard for the third consecutive day the suo moto notice and various petitions over the “constitutional situation” that developed following the National Assembly deputy speaker’s ruling to disallow a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan.*

Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial said that the court will try to give a verdict on the deputy speaker’s ruling by tomorrow (Wednesday) because the issue was holding up the formation of a caretaker government.

The chief justice also said that the court will only focus on the deputy speaker’s ruling as it cannot interfere in matters of state and foreign policy.

At the start of the hearing, Advocate Afshan Ghazanfar pleaded with the bench that Pakistan’s former ambassador to Washington, Asad Majeed, who had sent the communique containing the alleged warning to remove Imran Khan, be summoned before the court.

Chief Justice Bandial said that it was not possible as the court was not presently hearing any petition from an individual and will hear only political parties. The court rejected the petition from Advocate Afshan.
