PEMRA imposes Rs 500,000 fine on private TV Channel

ISLAMABAD, Oct 1 (APP): PEMRA Council of Complaints (CoC) has imposed Rs 500,000 fine on Channel 92 for levelling baseless allegations against Chairman National Accountability Bureau and giving analysis against the facts.

On June 13 the said channel in its programme Muqabil claimed

that NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry had been receiving pension

from the army on the base of a fake affidavit.

Qamar Zaman Chaudhry proved through the documents that pension

was his legal right which he had been receiving as per rules. Channel

92 and the hosts failed to defend their stance.

The CoC reprimanded the channel for defaming a respected

national institution and its head. The channel was imposed

Rs 500,000 fine and asked to tender an apology, otherwise

recommended cancellation of its license.

The CoC disposed of a complaint against the same channel by

Senator Rehman Malik, who did not want to pursue his complaint after

his point of view was telecast by Channel 92. The meeting was

chaired by Shamim Humyun.
