New census will be held under supervision of Pakistan Army in March 2016: Ishaq Dar

ISLAMABAD: The government decides to take foreign support to conduct the 6th Population and Housing Census scheduled to be held in March 2016 under Pak Army. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar directed the Economic Affairs Division to coordinate with the donor agencies and Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) to arrange the requisite foreign support and expertise to conduct the fresh census in the country. Pakistan is going to conduct the new census after 18 years as last time it was conducted in 1998. The first census in Pakistan was conducted in 1951, second in 1961, and third in 1972. Fourth census was held in March 1981 and fifth, which was due in 1991, was conducted in March 1998. The government would engage over 207,000 military and civilian personnel for the next population census. Total cost of the census is estimated at Rs 14.5 billion, of which Rs 6.9bn will be allocated for PBS and Rs 7.5bn for security and facilitation. Chief Statistician Asif Bajwa gave a comprehensive presentation on the preparations made by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) for conducting the census in the country.
