Russia-Germany inch closer as Merkel meets Putin

Russia President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel at their meeting in Sochi have discussed conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.

According to media reports, the two leaders also exchanged views on bilateral cooperation and regional security situation.

Later addressing a joint press conference with German Chancellor in Sochi, the Russian president called for an impartial investigation into an alleged chemical attack in Syria that raised sensitivities within most Western capitals.

He said that Russia condemns the use of chemical weapons and there should be an impartial investigation into what happened in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun in Syria.

Meanwhile, Western leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have asked Russia to stop supporting the Syrian regime led by Bashar al-Assad.
