ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has allowed PML-N candidate Bilal Azhar Kiyani to contest the election from NA-66 Jhelum.
The top court heard on Monday Kiyani’s appeal against the Islamabad High Court’s earlier decision
His lawyer told the court that Kiyani had given up his British citizenship before submitting his nomination papers.
He requested that the SC overturn the election tribunal’s decision rejecting his client’s nomination papers.
Justice Ijazul Hassan observed that after giving up a foreign passport, it can be obtained again as well. The certificate proving this is very important, he said.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar said that it seemed to him that Kiyani did not want to contest the election. He observed that it is being said that the court is becoming controversial. “If this is the case, then why are you approaching the court?” he asked Kiyani.
The SC later issued a notification regarding Kiyani’s nomination papers being accepted.
