USA to deploy special troops in Iraq to combat ISIS: US Defence Minister

WASHINGTON : The United States will expand its war against ISIS with a new deployment of special forces to take out the deadly terrorists in Iraq and Syria, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Tuesday. The “specialized expeditionary targeting force” will conduct raids, free hostages, gather intelligence and capture ISIS leaders, Carter told the House Armed Services Committee. The deployment is part of the US strategy to “accelerate” its offensive against the terrorists in the wake of the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris. “This is an important capability because it takes advantage of what we’re good at,” Carter said. “We’re good at intelligence, we’re good at mobility, we’re good at surprise. We have the long reach that no one else has. And it puts everybody on notice in Syria. “You don’t know at night who’s going to be coming in the window. And that’s the sensation that we want all of [ISIS’s] leadership and followers to have.” The new forces will assist Iraqi and Kurdish Peshmerga forces and will focus on defending Iraqi borders and building their capacity.
