ISLAMABAD - The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar found alcohol bottles and drugs from the room of incarcerated Pakistan Peoples Party leader Sharjeel Memon when he made a surprise visit to the hospital on Saturday.
The CJP made a surprise visit to the PPP leader’s hospital room at Ziauddin Hospital and found bottles of liquor, local media reported. Memon is currently under medical treatment at the hospital where his room has been declared a sub-jail.
During his meeting with the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Anwar Mansoor at the Supreme Court’s Karachi registry, the CJP said that when Memon was asked about the liquor, he denied that they were his.
The CJP also visited Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where Hussain Lawai is admitted. Justice Nisar also made a visit to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases where Omni Group Chairperson Anwar Majeed is admitted. Both are accused in a money laundering case through fake acounts.
Memon was sent to jail over Rs 5.7 billion corruption charges. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed a reference against Memon for his misconduct in payments regarding advertising campaigns.
It was revealed that Rs 5.7 billion was paid to seven advertising companies, which was a violation of Sindh Public Procurement Rules 2010. Memon was accused of issuing contract to advertising agencies at excessive rates without confirming the market rates. This had resulted in the loss of more than Rs 5 billion.
