Afghan President calls for closer engagement with Pakistan

KABUL:Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has expressed willingness to begin dialogue with Pakistan starting a new chapter.

He was addressing the second Kabul Process meeting in Kabul today.  He said Afghanistan and Pakistan should start government to government talks. The Afghan President offered recognition of the Taliban as a legitimate political group.

He said the peace process and a ceasefire must be agreed upon with the Taliban and the Afghan government will also work on the list of freeing Taliban prisoners.

Ashraf Ghani called on the Taliban to accept the offer, join the peace process and create unity among Afghans and save the country.

He also announced that Afghan government will issue passports and visas to Taliban members and their families and will also work to remove sanctions against Taliban leaders.

The Kabul Process meeting on mapping out a plan for peace in Afghanistan is being attended by representatives from twenty-five countries and organizations including the UN and NATO.APP/AFP
