Karachi Askari park swing not properly fitted, says inquiry report

ISLAMABAD: The swing ride that collapsed in Karachi’s Askari Park on July 15 was not properly fitted, says an inquiry report into the incident.
A 10-year-old girl was killed and at least 16 others were injured when a ‘flying turtle ride’ collapsed at the amusement park.
Officials who investigated the incident have found several loopholes in the fitting, material, and electrical accessories of the mechanical ride.
The ride was imported from China, according to the 14-page confidential report submitted to Sindh Chief Secretary Major (retd) Azam Suleman Khan.
During the park management’s own inspection, the ride was found ‘unsatisfactory’ for use, two weeks before the incident. The investigation officials blame the contractor and the park’s operational and audit teams for negligence. The report further says that the staff hired to operate the rides was experienced, but not well qualified.
To prevent such incidents, the inquiry committee strongly recommends inspection of all rides of Askari and other amusement parks in the city. It also advises daily maintenance of the rides.
The committee recommends the framing of rules and regulations for amusement parks across the country.
“Well defined SOPs of operation and maintenance of all rides should be prepared and followed as per international standards,” says the report.
