Alleged embezzlement of $70 million US funds for Pakistani girls, Maryam Nawaz lands in trouble

ISLAMABAD - Maryam Nawaz has been accused of embezzling funds of the ‘Let Girls Learn’ campaign in a petition filed in the Sindh High Court.
The court heard the case on Monday.
The federal government submitted its reply to the court in which it said that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Pakistan and the US for $70 million.
They agreed to work on different projects pertaining to the education sector.
The US government had allocated $51 million for different projects under USAid, while $19 million was released for the ‘Let Girls Learn’ Project. The project was launched by former US first lady Michelle Obama. In 2016, Obama and Maryam addressed a joint press conference and announced that the project will aim to benefit 200,000 girls in Pakistan.
The petition has been filed by civil rights activist Bisma Naureen. She said that a NAB inquiry should be initiated against Maryam over the allocation of funds. The petition also asks what authority Maryam visited Washington with and met Obama. Maryam did not hold any official post at the time, it points out.
